Augusto Pinochet joined the military when he was seventeen years old, and by , he was Commander in Chief of the Chilean Army. The Chilean President at the time was Salvador Allende, a Marxist who had been democratically elected. Shortly after his appointment as Chief of the Army, Pinochet was involved in a military coup to challenge President Allende. Eventually, the presidential palace was under threat. Allende committed suicide on the 11 September when he shot himself.
