Early Life

Judy Baca, an American artist, activist, and professor of Chicano Studies, was born on September 20, , in Los Angeles, California, to Mexican-American parents. Raised in the predominantly Black and Latino neighborhood of Watts, she lived in a female-headed household consisting of her mother, aunts Rita and Delia, and grandmother Francisca. Her father, a military serviceman, never acknowledged her existence and returned to the East Coast after her birth. Baca's grandmother, a curandera (herbal healer), deeply influenced her sense of local Chicano culture. Baca's mother later married Clarence Ferrari in , adding stepsiblings Gary and Diane to the family. They moved to Pacoima, Los Angeles, which was significantly different from Watts, with Mexican-Americans being a minority.

Judy Baca&#;s inspiring work has challenged others to create social change with her many murals, paintings, and sculptures. Born on September 20, in Los Angeles, California, this second-generation, Chicana woman has been inspired by her heritage and upbringing in a matriarchal family to create these works of art that aim to inspire others to create social change in their community. As a child, Baca was learned a lot from her female-dominated household, which included her mother, grandmother, and two aunts (Biersteker 1). For a good part of her childhood, Baca's grandmother raised her, while her mother worked to support the family. Her father was never a part of her life, as she never met him. When her mother remarried, she moved to a different part of L.A. and was forced to enter a school where the primary language was English. Coming from a Spanish-speaking household and having to deal with the adjustment of the new language caused her to struggle in school. It was because of this struggle with language that Baca began to be interested in art. Because of her language problems, &#;Baca's teacher permitted the her to sit at a corner desk and paint, while the other students

(Judy) Baca grew up in the Los Angeles neighborhood of Watts and in Pacoima and attended California State University, Northridge, where she studied art and minored in history and education (BA , MFA ). She created her first large-scale mural when she was a teacher at the Catholic high school she had attended as an adolescent, and in she worked with at-risk youth in a citywide art project. These early projects integrated defining aspects of Baca's subsequent practice—scale and collaboration—to enable politically and culturally marginalized groups to assert a positive visual presence within the community, and she continues to confront issues of cultural identity, displacement, and exploitation experienced by people of color in her work. In Baca cofounded the Social and Public Art Resource Center (SPARC) in Venice, California, with the filmmaker and director Donna Deitch (b. ) and the artist and teacher Christina Schlesinger (b. ). In that same year she began painting one of her most important collaborative mural projects, The Great Wall of Los Angeles, which also functioned as Baca's master's thesis. Described as a monument to interracial harm
