Juntamente com Soishiro Satake, Maeda foi um dos que encabeçaram a segunda geração da Kodokan, que substituiu a primeira até o início do século XX. Satake, com 1,75 cm e 80 kg, era inigualável no sumô amador, mas admitiu que ele próprio não foi capaz de igualar a Maeda no judô.
