Nzingha Prescod&#;s journey into Olympic fencing contender

Before Nzingha Prescod was born, her calling seemed predestined. Throughout her childhood, she played a variety of sports at her mom’s request — gymnastics, tennis and dance, among others — but the most atypical one stuck: fencing.

After all, Prescod was named after 17th century Angolan queen Nzingha Mbande, who fought off Europeans when they tried to seize her territory. There was Prescod, barely a teenager, fighting off Russians, Germans, Hungarians and Romanians as she traveled the world and rose up the ranks of a sport whose demographic she didn’t exactly fit.

Prescod, 23, is less than a month away from her second trip to the Olympics. As an unproven year-old at the London Games, she finished 22nd in the women’s individual foil (one of fencing’s three disciplines). Since then, she has become the first American foil fencer to win a Grand Prix, the first African-American to medal at the World Championships and the No. 10 fencer in the world with a realistic shot at the medal stand in Rio de Janeiro.

Prescod hails from the well-regarded Peter Westbrook Foundation, an organization dedicated to bringing the art of fencing to the inner-city youth of New York, where she has been fencing since she was nine years old. Despite the odds, Nzingha earned the opportunity to pursue high performance fencing training after being introduced to the Peter Westbrook Foundation in Manhattan at age 9 under the tutelage of Olympic Coach, Buckie Leach.

Nzingha Prescod OLY is a Brooklyn native and one of the most decorated athletes in U.S. fencing history. She is a two-time Olympian, World Champion and four-time Senior World Medalist. She became the first Black woman to win an individual medal at the Senior World Championships when she claimed bronze in

In July of , she and her team captured Team USA’s first-ever World Championships gold medal for the USA Foil. She is the first American woman to win a foil Grand Prix and has ranked as high as fifth in the world.

Prescod is a graduate of New York City’s highly acclaimed Stuyvesant High School and Columbia University. As the founder and CEO of The Prescod Institute for Sport, Teamwork and Education (PISTE), Prescod has committed to expanding access to sport as a sports equity champion advocating for inclusive and high-quality sport education.

She served as the thought leader for New York City Council legislation to create the Mayor’s Office of Sports, Wellness & Recreation. This new office will facilitate need-based access to competitive and recreational sports and increase the role of sport in early educ
