Written in , this is one of the earliest Malayali novels to meditate on questions of caste, conversion and the possibilities for emancipation afforded to lower castes by colonial modernity. It's author Potheri Kunhambu was born into the Tiyya caste and educated himself; eventually he entered into the legal profession as a vakil (lawyer). Although Kunhambu insists that he is writing a didactic text, the story does not sink under the weight of its own burdens as other didactic novels might. Instead the novel itself is surprisingly readable, never weighted down with excess moralizing and enlivened by asides addressed to the reader directly (and these are endearing rather than self-indulgent).

In this novel, Kunhambu mobilizes a range of Sanskrit and classical Hindu texts (especially the Manusmriti and Mahabharat) to explore the incoherences within Hindu philosophy on the question of morality versus adherence to caste strictures.
