The Wrong Box
Robert Louis Stevensons macabre Victorian yarn has been impressively mounted by producer-director Bryan Forbes. He has lined up an impeccable cast of Britains character comedian actors and brought his usual intelligent flourish to the film. But it might have improved this Columbia release had he written the script for The Wrong Box himself, instead of using the uneven work of Larry Gelbart and Burt Shevelove.
Storyline concerns a macabre lottery in which 20 parents each toss some money into a kitty for their children, the last survivor to draw the loot. Eventual survivors are two brothers who havent seen each other for 40 years. One of them (John Mills) makes ineffective attempts to bump off his brother (Ralph Richardson), and their offspring take a more than casual interest in the proceedings.
Mills amusingly hams his way through two or three sequences as one of the dying brothers. Richardson, bland, imperturable old bore, is superb. He and Wilfrid Lawson, portraying a decrepit butler, virtually carry away the acting honors.
Synopsis:
As the members of a group investment scheme gradually die off, two elderly brothers Masterman (John Mills) and Joseph (Ralph Richardson) Finsbury find themselves last in line to inherit the money. Mills, concerned about the well-being of his soft-spoken nephew (Michael Caine), intends to kill off his brother so that the money will be Caines; meanwhile, enroute to visit their dying uncle (Mills), Richardsons two scheming nephews (Peter Cook and Dudley Moore) mistakenly believe Richardson has died in a train wreck, and seek the help of an unscrupulous doctor (Peter Sellers) in falsifying the date on his death certificate.

Response to Peary’s Review:
Peary argues that while the actors are funny [and] the lines are funny, this once-popular black comedy based on a novel by Robert Louis Stevenson and Lloyd Osborne, about an outdated inheritance scheme known as a tontine isnt fun

Petal-soft hands are the mark of a great ornithologist
Funny and often laugh out loud hilarious story of two brothers (John Mills and Ralph Richardson), one of whom must outlive the other in order to win a Tontine started at their boys school and going to the final survivor of the class. What transpires is "The Wrong Box," a film directed by Bryan Forbes and also starring Michael Caine, Peter Cook, Dudley Moore, Wilfred Lawson, Nanette Newman (Mrs. Forbes) and Peter Sellers.
The first ten minutes or so of the movie is hilarious, as it shows the demise of the other students over the years. Regarding the surviving Finsbury brothers, one side of has Caine and his grandfather Mills, who is desperate to win, so he summons his brother to his "deathbed" in order to kill him, in one of the funniest scenes in the movie. On the other side, Cook and Moore are Richardson's nephews, who have devoted themselves to keeping their uncle alive. They needn't have bothered because he can't be killed anyway. He walks away from a train crash, but there's a mix-up, and he's believed dead. The nephews are desperate to cover this up un

Film Synopsis
In the mids, the parents of children attending an exclusive public school each contributes one thousand pounds to a tontine investment scheme. The beneficiary of the scheme will be the child who outlives all of his peers. Many years later, only two members of the tontine are still alive, the brothers Masterman and Joseph Finsbury. On his deathbed, Masterman summons his brother to his house so that he can murder him, ensuring that his adopted son Michael, a poor medical student, will inherit the fortune. Joseph's two greedy nephews, Morris and John, are just as determined to get their hands on the money, and they are prepared to do anything to ensure that Masterman is the first to meet his maker. Unfortunately, on the way to London, the train carrying Joseph and his two nephews is derailed. Morris and John mistake the mangled remains of a serial killer for their uncle and hastily revise their plans. All they need to do is to put the body into storage for a few days, forge a death certificate, and reveal the body once Masterman has died. What they do not realise is thatBiographies you may also like
