Prof. of English KVA DAV College for Women Karnal (Haryana) ABSTRACT Nirad C. Chaudhuri has always been accused by the critics for being defensive for the ways of the Britishers that they used during the British rule in India. This accusation has damaged his reputation as a literary writer in India. However, some other critics see the things from a wider perspective, and therefore, do not hesitate in releasing Chaudhuri from this accusation. These critics give their view that Chaudhuri's criticism of Indian social life emerges from his predilection for Western social life. Thus, in his autobiography, the author describes his personal experiences in detail which shaped his personality in a particular manner. The first volume of Chaudhuri's memoirs, The Autobiography of an Unknown Indian , , met with lavish praise ("the one great book to have come out of the Indo-English encounter"V. S. Naipaul), general admiration and some harsh criticism, particularly from Indian nationalists. This second volume, almost pages long, perhaps surpasses it, in the depth, range and authority of its socio-historical commentary and the pungency of its language. Chaudhuri's fundamental thesis is that the British Raj in its 19th century heyday brought the breath of life to Indian, and more specifically Bengali, culture, while there is more corruption and lawlessness in India now than there was then. Yet he lambasts the British for the arrogant racism that hastened the demise of their Indian empire, and running though his book like an ominous and finally tragic groundswell is the seemingly ineradicable hatred of Hindus and Muslims for each other, and of both for the British. Nehru’s Autobiography v/s Chaudhuri’s Autobiography Autobiographies all over the world and especially in India are extensively read, enjoyed, but paradoxically enough, they have received very scant critical attention. The critical negligence is probably based upon the misconception that the art of autobiography is very easy to practise or that it is not at all an art, but a bold enumeration of drab events, facts, dates and places, etc. Now when the world is fast moving from parochialism to internationalism in every field, it is high time for the students of literature to study the works of art not only intensively but comparatively also. The comparative approach to literature enables us to widen the critical horizon and develop the concept of world literature. The comparative study, needless to say, aims at establishing the universality and oneness of human experience through the depiction of the diverse particularities of it.
