Brandon Lee, a Memoir

April

It’s one a.m. and I’m wiped out after a long waitressing shift for the Ahmanson Theater crowd in downtown L.A. I’m about to turn out the light over the clock radio when my phone rings.

I figure it’s my old college roommate calling after anchoring the eleven o’clock news at KSBW Monterey. Too tired to talk about her latest military romance, I let the answering machine pick up. My chirpy outgoing message grates on my nerves, then the long beep.

“Shan? Shannon, are you there?”

It’s Brandon. He doesn’t sound like himself.

His voice is weighted by sadness, urgent with some indecipherable fear. Adrenaline courses through me, I quickly pick up. &#;Hello?”

“You’re there.” He sounds relieved.

“Yes. Are you okay?”

“I don’t know. I was listening to John Lennon, you know &#; to Beautiful Boy … the song about his son …”

Brandon’s crying, which he’s never done in front of me. He’s larger than life, given to grand gestures and grandstanding. He’s confident, cocky and romantic, but rarely vulnerable.

“I miss my dad,” he says brokenly, “Can you come over?”

“I’ll be right there.”

Banging the phone down, I yank on my sweats and grab the glasses I wear

Mascara Boy: Bullied, Assaulted & Near Death: Surviving Trauma & Addiction

Author Brandon Lee is a two-time Emmy winning journalist for his reporting on the opioid crisis. The irony is that Brandon was also a drug addict. Brandon's trauma, however, started as a child when he was sexually abused by his piano teacher and youth soccer coach. The tragedy is that Brandon held it inside because of shame and fear. It wasn't until the age of 37 when Brandon was reporting on a story about sex assault in the #MeToo era when he finally got the courage to break his silence about being a sex victim and how that trauma led him down a dark path of sex and drug addiction.
At age 16, Brandon was snorting cocaine, getting high off whippets, and drinking to blackouts all while attending Catholic school. The drug abuse got worse as Brandon got older. He would attend raves and circuit parties to get high. His drug addiction fueled his sex addiction. Brandon eventually created a double life. One as a professional news anchor. The other as a strung out druggie in the slums of Los Angeles. He describes the moment he took his first hit off the crack pipe. He felt invincible. Unstoppable.

Mascara Boy: Bullied, Assaulted & Near Death: Surviving Trauma and Addiction

Boston TV viewers may remember Brandon Rudat as the former clean cut anchor and reporter at WHDH Channel 7. Off camera, he led another life, one of late night, drug-fueled sex-athons at clubs and bath houses.

In his new memoir “Mascara Boy: Bullied, Assaulted & Near Death,” Rudat offers a candid look at those two selves, the struggles as an addict and the goals he set for himself to lead a sober, stable, and healthy life.

“I hope that stepping forward, sharing my full name and showing my face, and not hiding in anonymity, will remove some of the stigma of recovering addicts and open the hearts and minds of older generations,” writes the year-old broadcaster who now uses his middle name Lee as his surname.
Written in a conversational tell-it-like-is-style, the book is a compelling read, an intimate and raw journal about his public life and private struggles. But the book also serves a cautionary tale, how repressed traumas - if not dealt with head on - can surface in unhealthy ways. The title of the book refers to a childhood nickname that classmates used to bully Lee because of his na
