The galactic city model, also known as the peripheral model, was created in the s by Chauncy Harris who also co-authored the multiple nuclei model. Based on the city of Detroit, Michigan, the galactic city model shows a city that’s been taken over by a car based living and has been affected by urban sprawl. It has a rapidly growing suburb, and an increasing number of edge cities. A city that is based on this model is very decentralized, this is again due to urban sprawl.

In the center of the model is the CBD or central business district, it is where commercial businesses and companies locate. However, in this model, the CBD is very decentralized and empty due to the urban to suburban migration. Entertainment businesses and other services have moved out into the suburbs along with the urban to suburban migration too. These businesses concentrate in edge cities which are located at highway junctions. Harris was a prominent geographer best known for his work in researching the geography of the former Soviet Union. A brilliant student, he earned his A.B. from Brigham Young University in ; a Rhodes Scholar, he completed a second bachelor's degree at Oxford University in , an M.A. there in , and a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in ; he also studied for a year at the London School of Economics. His teaching career began at Indiana University in , and he taught at the University of Nebraska from to Harris's academic work was interrupted by World War II, when he was enlisted by the Office of Strategic Services (the forerunner of the CIA) to work in the Office of the Geographer. In this capacity, Harris, holding the rank of Army lieutenant, lent his expertise to the important work of gathering data from captured German maps. A former president of the AAG, Chauncy Dennison Harris, was at the time of his death on December 26, the Samuel N. Harper Distinguished Service Professor Emeritus at the University of Chicago. Awarded a Rhodes scholarship in , he studied geography at Oxford and the London School of Economics and then completed his training at the University of Chicago where he received the Ph.D. degree in  His dissertation study of Salt Lake City was an early example of urban as opposed to rural or environmental focus in American geography. After wartime service in the Department of State and OSS, Professor Harris returned to the University of Chicago where he remained for the rest of his career.
