Shakuntala Devi (4 November  – 21 April ) was an Indian mental calculator and writer, popularly known as the "Human Computer". Her talent earned her a place in the edition of The Guinness Book of World Records. However, the certificate for the record was given posthumously on 30 July , despite Devi achieving her world record on 18 June at Imperial College, London. Devi was a precocious child and she demonstrated her arithmetic abilities at the University of Mysore without any formal education.

Devi strove to simplify numerical calculations for students. She wrote a number of books in her later years, including novels as well as texts about mathematics, puzzles, and astrology. She wrote the book The World of Homosexuals, which is considered the first study of homosexuality in India. She saw homosexuality in a positive light and is considered a pioneer in the field.

Chunibala Devi was a film and theatre artist associated with Bengali cinema and stage. She is best known for playing the old aunt, Indira Thakrun, to Apu and Durga in the first installment of Satyajith Ray’s Apu Trilogy - Pather Panchali. A landmark movie of Indian cinema, it marked the debut of Ray as a director alongside a string of new and less experienced artists including actors and crew, using a very tight budget. In the s she has appeared in a few films and Pather Panchali was her last film. When she appeared in the movie, she was already 80+ and her death scene is one of the heart touching moments of this classic film.
