Mr Horace Walpole
Horace Walpole (–) was an influential English writer, politician, and art historian, best known for his role in the literary and cultural circles of 18th-century England. Born on September 24, , into a prominent political and aristocratic family, Walpole was the youngest son of Sir Robert Walpole, the first Prime Minister of Great Britain. His mother, Catherine Shorter, came from a wealthy and influential family, providing Horace with a privileged upbringing.

&#;WALPOLE, HORATIO or HORACE, fourth Earl of Orford (–), author, wit, and letter-writer, was born in Arlington Street (No. 17) on 24 Sept. (O.S.), being the fourth son of Sir Robert Walpole, first earl of Orford [q. v.], by his first wife, Catherine Shorter, eldest daughter of John Shorter of Bybrook, near Ashford in Kent. He was eleven years younger than the rest of his father's children, a circumstance which, taken in connection with his dissimilarity, both personally and mentally, to the other members of the family, has been held to lend some countenance to the contemporary suggestion, first revived by Lady Louisa Stuart (Introduction to Lord Wharncliffe's edition of the Works of Lady Mary Wortley Montagu), that he was the son, not of Sir Robert Walpole, but of Carr, lord Hervey, the elder brother of John, lord Hervey, the ‘Sporus’ of Pope. Horace Walpole, 4th Earl of Orford (September 24, – March 2, ), more commonly known as Horace Walpole, was a writer, politician, and architectural innovator. He was the youngest son of British Prime MinisterRobert Walpole and the cousin of Lord Nelson. The pseudo-Gothic castle which he built at his country house, Strawberry Hill, became the showplace of England and revived the Gothic style many decades before its Victorian successors.
Walpole's more than 3, Letters provide insight into the intellectual side of the aristocracy of his period. His novel, The Castle of Otranto, heralded a new genre, the Gothic novel, which anticipated nineteenth-century Romanticism. Walpole's other important works include Historic Doubts on Richard III, Anecdotes of Painting in England, and Reminiscences.
