HOLLOWAY: Looking back on Calhoun
Most of the students reading this column know me only as the dean of Yale College. It’s an exciting and challenging job, and it’s been an honor to serve you in this capacity. However, prior to moving into this role, I was the master of Calhoun College from through (with a –12 sabbatical interrupting that run). Those were the most meaningful years of service in my almost 20 years at Yale.
When former University President Rick Levin invited me to the position, he gave me a week to decide. Without much hesitation, my wife and I agreed to join the Calhoun community. Her reasoning carried the day: We would raise our family — our daughter was then 5, our son 2 — with some of the most interesting and inspirational young people in the world. What neither of us anticipated, though, is that this new community of students, dining hall and custodial workers, and Calhoun administrators would play such a powerful role in mentoring our children and in shaping our own worldview. We forged powerful and abiding relationships with hundreds of ’Hounies, and we know that our friendships will abide for the rest of our lives.

Prior to accepting the presidency of Rutgers, Dr. Holloway was provost of Northwestern University from to and a member of the faculty of Yale University from to At Yale, he served as Dean of Yale College and the Edmund S. Morgan Professor of African American Studies, History, and American Studies.

He is the author of African American History: A Very Short Introduction and The Cause of Freedom: A Concise History of African Americans (Oxford University Press, February and February , respectively). Holloway, who is currently on academic leave from the University as a fellow at the Stanford Humanities Center, will begin his five-year term on July 1.
Holloway, who earned his doctorate at Yale in , is a scholar of post-emancipation American history. His major book, "Confronting the Veil: Abram Harris Jr., E. Franklin Frazier, and Ralph Bunche ," tells the story of three young black intellectual-activists who criticized the NAACP for its cautious civil rights agenda, and who saw in the turmoil of the Great Depression an opportunity to advocate class-based solutions to what were considered racial problems.
His most recent book, published this month, is an annotation and introduction of Ralph Bunche's previously unpublished "A Brief and Tentative Analysis of Negro Leadership." Holloway is now working on a new book, titled "Jim Crow Wisdom: Memory, Identity and Politics in Black America, ," which is under contract to the University of North Carolina Press.
