President Murmu honours Kanaklata Barua: Who was the freedom fighter?
President Droupadi Murmu in her speech on the eve of Independence Day hailed the contribution of women freedom fighters.
“On the eve of Independence Day, I join my fellow citizens in paying grateful tribute to the known and unknown freedom fighters whose sacrifices have made it possible for India to regain its rightful place in the comity of nations,” Murmu said.
Great women freedom fighters like Matangini Hazra and Kanaklata Barua laid down their lives for Bharat-Mata, Murmu added.
But who was Barua, one of the youngest martyrs of the Quit India movement?

Early years
Kanaklata Barua was born on 22 December in Assam’s Barangabari village.
According to The Print, her parents were Krishna Kanta Barua and Korneswari Barua.
Barua’s mother passed away at age five, as per the Feminism India website.
Her father remarried, but would pass away less than a decade later.
Now an orphan and in the third standard, Barua dropped out of school to take care of her siblings.

Kanaklata: The golden girl of India&#;s Freedom Struggle
It was the s. India’s Freedom Struggle was at its peak. Young Indians especially were getting impatient. They wanted to be rid of the British rule as soon as possible.
A band of youngsters in Gohpur, Assam, had formed the Mrityu Bahini, a group determined to lay down their lives for the nation.
On August 8, , the youngsters were excited. Mahatma Gandhi was expected to announce an action plan at Gowalia Tank in far-off Mumbai. It would take a day or two for news to reach them.
However, the very next day they heard that Gandhiji and several other leaders had been arrested by the police. The Indian National Congress, which was spearheading the freedom movement, was banned. So were all public gatherings.

Early Life of Kanaklata Barua
Born to Krishna Kanta Barua and Korneshwari Barua on 22nd December, at Barangabari village of Gohpur sub- division of Sonitpur district, Kanaklata Barua was the youngest freedom fighter from Assam. Her grandfather, Ghana Kanta Barua was a reputed hunter in Darrang District. At an early age of only 5 years old, she lost her mother and her father remarried. When she was only 13, her father too died and she was left with the responsibility to look after her younger siblings.
The ancestors of Kanaklata Barua belonged to the kingdom of Dolakharia Barua of the erstwhile state of Ahom and they had renounced the title of Dolakharia. Instead they only retained the `Barua` title.
