Kara Kennedy, the oldest child of the late Sen. Edward Kennedy, died suddenly Friday evening at a Washington-area health club.
Former Rep. Patrick Kennedy confirmed the death of his year-old sister, adding "she's with dad."
Kara Kennedy had herself battled lung cancer: In , doctors removed a malignant tumor. Patrick Kennedy said that his sister loved to exercise, but that he thinks her cancer treatment "took quite a toll on her and weakened her physically."
"Her heart gave out," he said.
Kara Kennedy was the oldest of three children. She and her brother Edward Kennedy Jr. helped run their father's U.S. Senate campaign in The National Organization on Fetal Alcohol Syndrome lists her as a national advisory board member on its website.
Edward Kennedy Jr. himself was a survivor after losing a leg to bone cancer as a child. And Patrick Kennedy had surgery in to remove a non-cancerous tumor that was pressing against his spine.

Sept. 20, &#; -- The heart attack death of Kara Kennedy, the latest in the tragedy-touched Kennedy dynasty, may have been related to the aggressive cancer treatment she underwent about a decade ago, say her brother and a cardiologist.
The year-old daughter of the late Sen. Edward M. Kennedy died Sept. 16 while working out at her Washington, D.C., gym.
"Depending upon where the lung cancer was, her heart could have taken a direct hit," said Dr. Sharonne N. Hayes, a cardiologist and founder of the Women's Heart Clinic at the Mayo Clinic.
More details on Kara Kennedy's death are expected to be released by the Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the United States Senate as funeral arrangements are being made for Wednesday.
Kara Kennedy was diagnosed with lung cancer in and was initially told it was inoperable. But with her father's help, she found a surgeon at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston who removed part of her right lung, followed by chemotherapy and radiation.

During the services at Holy Trinity Church in Washington on Wednesday, her brother Ted Kennedy Jr. said she was "always up for anything and always there to help."
