The butler retreats through the chandeliered foyer, the dining room beyond.
I take a slow look around. In the living room: overstuffed sofas and chairs in blue and coral chintzes and silks against yellow striped silk walls. Elegant and yet a bitextreme. In the library: wood-paneled walls, a pair of large Miro paintings. And in the dining room: another Miro— huge, this one—and a seventeenth-century Spanish-colonial painting of an angel with a gun. A Latin sensibility, make no mistake about it. But there's an Upper East Side edge here as well.
Again the butler answers the door. In comes Hernandez's aggressive new public-relations man, Arnold Jurdem. What does it say about Marife Hernandez that she's hired as brash an operator as Jurdem? Hernandez, after all, has always been good at promoting herself. She made her name in the Carter years as the State Department's chief of protocol in New York, entertaining the likes of Margaret Thatcher and Pierre Trudeau and Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands. More recently, she was mentioned as a possible successor to Bess Myerson's scandal-ridden post of New York's cultura
Ms. Hernández was educated at Wellesley College and Columbia University. She was Director of Public Affairs at WPIX Television New York where she produced and hosted news programs and documentaries. President Carter appointed her Chief of Protocol of the United States. After her Government service, Ms. Hernández founded the Cultural Communications Group (CCG.), a Marketing firm in partnership with Ogilvy and Mather. Ms. Hernández created and served as President of Baker Nye International, an asset management firm in New York.
Ms. Hernández was a founding member of the National Democratic Institute for International Affairs (NDI.) Ms. Hernández is a Trustee of the New York-Presbyterian Hospital, Director of the Salzburg Festival Society, and is Chairman of the Vienna Philharmonic Society. She has served on the Boards of The Americas Society, Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, The Conservation Trust of Puerto Rico, Long Island University, Marymount Manhattan College, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The National Symphony Orchestra, New York City’s Convention and Visitors Bureau, The Parsons School of Design, The Spanish Institute and the Women’s Forum.

I think about where I was mentally and musically before finding out I would be studying in Vienna last May, and I can’t believe how much change has occurred since then. In just a year, I now have the opportunity to work, perform and travel the world with one of the greatest orchestras in existence.
