Maximilian and Carlota: A Tale of Romance and Tragedy
In this new telling of Mexico's Second Empire and Louis Napoléon's installation of Maximilian von Habsburg and his wife, Carlota of Belgium, as the emperor and empress of Mexico, Maximilian and Carlota brings the dramatic, interesting, and tragic time of this six-year-siege to life. From to , the French incorporated the armies of Austria, Belgium--including forces from Crimea to Egypt--to fight and subdue the regime of Mexico's Benito Juárez during the time of the U.S. Civil War. France viewed this as a chance to seize Mexican territory in a moment they were convinced the Confederacy would prevail and take over Mexico. With both sides distracted in the U.S., this was their opportunity to seize territory in North America. In , with aid from the United States, this movement came to a disastrous end both for the royals and for France while ushering in a new era for Mexico. In a bid to oust Juárez, Mexican conservatives appealed to European leaders to select a monarch to run their country. An important and very handsome book has just been published by Mexico's Instituto Nacional de Antropolía e Historia: Las Memorias del Jardinero de Maximiliano, the personal memoirs of Maximilian's gardener, the botanist Wilhelm Knechtel, of his years in Mexico, The text, originally published in German a century ago, has been translated for the first time by noted scholar Susanne Igler (author of Carlota de México) and introduced by one of Mexico's leading experts on Maximilian and the Second Empire, Ampáro Gómez Tepexicuapan. The edition also includes a cornucopia of rare photographs, cartes-de-visites, full color illustrations, maps, and an extensive bibliography.
As Tepexicuapan writes in her introduction (my translation into English here), "to be the Gardner to the Court was, and surely will continue to be, an enviable title. El día viernes primero de enero de , El Pájaro Verdedaría a conocer en su sección editorial la &#;Noticia Biográfica&#; del príncipe Maximiliano escrita por José María Gutiérrez de Estrada (1). En aquella noticia, que ocupó aproximadamente tres de sus pequeñas páginas (30 x 35 cm.), aparecería la litografía del futuro emperador junto con las iniciales, &#;S. A. I. y R. (Su Alteza Ilustrísima y Reverendísima). El archiduque Fernando Maximiliano de Austria&#;. En esta imagen, en cuyo pié de página no figura el nombre del autor (2) y en donde además no se le da el calificativo de emperador de México, el próximo soberano aparece con los rasgos de un joven de aproximadamente 25 años, y no con el semblante del hombre maduro que arribó a tierras mexicanas en cuyo rostro (3), captado por el fotógrafo Giuseppe Malovich en el año de y por el pintor Albert Graefle en , luce una barba crecida que le hace parecer de mayor edad. MEXICO, D.F., (SUN-AEE).- Se escribían como dos enamorados anónimos: "Angel bienamado", era como él la llamaba al inicio de sus cartas. Ella abría de otra manera "Tesoro entrañablemente amado". Pasarían, como un par de amantes más, pero en la historia su lugar es otro. Quienes están ahí son Carlota y Maximiliano, la pareja imperial.
Un conjunto de cartas que los mantuvo unidos aun con la distancia, primero en Europa y más tarde en América, son recuperadas por el profesor Konrad Ratz -austriaco, como el emperador- en el libro "Correspondencia inédita entre Maximiliano y Carlota".
En las cartas, conservadas por la Universidad de Texas en Austin, la pareja comentaba asuntos políticos, pero también aprovechaba el papel para describir los ambientes y paisajes, y reflejar los sentimientos.
Ratz no llegó a aficionarse a la figura del emperador en Austria, hasta una visita a México en , donde conoció un libro de José Fuentes Mares sobre el proceso al archiduque.
