A History of William Hill
For many this is the first name in gambling: Growing up in the days before the arrival of the Internet, William Hill betting shops were prevalent on British High Streets and those of a certain age who still like to bet online would have almost certainly used one of their shops at some point.
They aren’t necessarily the oldest bookmaker still in existence but their history stretches back over 80 years so how did it all began and how did they become the respected brand that we all know today?
Beginnings: to ’s
The company was founded in by a Mr William Hill himself and in the days before the industry was fully legalised, the official history states that it was set up as a telephone and postal service only and certainly that would have been a main focus of the operation at that time.
William Hill, like many of his contemporaries, started out in bookmaking at a young age and while working as an apprentice at the BSA motorcycle factory during World War I, he would drive around and collect bets on his bike.

- Our founder, William Hill, started out in , travelling around Birmingham on a motorbike and taking bets in the local area. He made enough capital to open his very first office above a hat shop taking racecourse bets over the telephone.

- As a company, William Hill opened its first 18 betting shops all over London to capitalise on their popularity.

Online operator has completed its acquisition of William Hill’s non-US assets from Caesars for £bn (€bn/$bn), and has announced the group’s new leadership team.
had initially agreed in September to acquire the non-US business of William Hill. This came soon after US operator Caesars acquired the entire William Hill business for approximately £bn, with the intent to dispose of all but its US assets.
Originally, the purchase price for the deal was £bn. However, and Caesars agreed to reduce the purchase price to acquire the assets by £m, with the cash portion of the deal now set at £m instead of £m.
This, it said, was due to a “change in the macro-economic and regulatory environment”, but at the time it also revealed that the William Hill business’ licence to operate in Great Britain was under review.
After receiving shareholder approval last month, the deal has now closed today.
