Who is Ned Kelly?
Edward Kelly, better known as Ned Kelly, was a famous Australian bushranger, known for his illegal and unlawful activities against the ‘Government of Victoria.’ About half of the 25 years of his life was spent either behind bars or in clashes with the police. Ned and his family moved to Australia as immigrant
Early Years
There are probably few people covered here at Biographics who are more divisive than Ned Kelly. Australia’s most famous outlaw and bushranger, he is primarily remembered for his final showdown with the police where Ned and his men wore homemade armor.
To some people, he is a folk hero; a working-class revolutionary who took a stand against British colonial authority. To others, he is simply a cold-blooded villain who has been undeservedly mythologized and morphed into the “Robin Hood” of Australia.
We’ll let you hear his story and form your own opinion, but there is one thing certain. For better or worse, Ned Kelly has become one of Australia’s greatest cultural icons.
Edward “Ned” Kelly was born in Beveridge, Victoria, which back then was still a colony of the British Crown. His date of birth is unknown, but is generally believed to either be December or June
His father was John Kelly, also known as “Red,” an Irish criminal who was transported to Australia in his early 20s for stealing pigs. He served his time on Van Diemen’s Land, better known today as Tasmania, and afterwards, like many other convicts, chose to remain in Australia and make a new life
How Ned Kelly became Australia's most famous criminal
As the reinforcements made their way to the inn in the early hours of June 28, Kelly and his gang donned their iconic armour.
They had crafted the protection themselves from parts of a plough.
A siege ensued and police opened fire on the inn, injuring many of the hostages.
Joe Byrne was killed, while Ned fled into the bush while the remaining two gang members continued their gunfire.
At dawn, Kelly, still wearing his armour, renewed his assault on the police.
Journalist Tom Carrington, who was at the siege, described Kelly's terrifying appearance.
"There was no head visible and in the dim light of morning, with the steam rising from the ground, it looked for all the world like the ghost of Hamlet's father with no head, only a very thick neck," he said.
"The figure continued gradually to advance, stopping every now and then and moving what looked like its headless neck mechanically round, and then raising one foot onto a log, and aiming and firing a revolver.
"Shot after shot was fired at it, but without effect."
The shots did take effect eventually. Kelly was hit in his u
Ned Kelly the Bushranger (from The Australasian Sketcher, 7 August )
Edward 'Ned' Kelly (), bushranger, is Australia's pre-eminent folk hero. Kelly and his siblings were raised by their mother, neé Ellen Quinn, after the death of their father, an Irish former convict. The family was in constant conflict with the authorities, and Kelly, implicated in the criminal activities of the Quinn clan, was charged with several offences over the s and 70s. A police crackdown led to the arrest of Mrs Kelly in April In October, Redmond Barry sentenced her to 3 years' hard labour. Soon after, Ned Kelly, his brother Dan and two companions shot three policemen who were searching for them at Stringybark Creek. They avoided capture until they arrived in the town of Glenrowan in June , intending to ambush a police train. In the town's inn, Kelly, wearing a homemade suit of metal armour, was wounded in a siege in which the others were killed. He was hanged in Melbourne Gaol on 11 November
