This is the Biography of Olayinka Herbert Samuel Heelas Badmus Macaulay, simply known as Herbert Macaulay, the father of Nigerian Nationalism. He was an architect, engineer, journalist, musician, politician, surveyor and a Nigerian nationalist.
Biography
Herbert Macaulay was born on March 14, in Lagos, Nigeria. As founding father of Nigerian nationalism, he helped to lay the foundation of modern Nigeria and contributed to the shaping of popular perceptions of a modern nation and its obligations to the public. In addition, he maintained an abiding interest in the history and concerns of black people throughout the world.
Often he published news relating to the wider black world as well as the activities and views of Nigerian students abroad, especially those who went to the United States. Many Pan-African and other black organizations knew about his activities and sought his attention. His voluminous papers housed at the University of Ibadan include correspondence with the leaders of a variety of international black organizations as well as a sizeable collection of their publications.

Early African independence advocate Herbert Macauley was born in Lagos, Nigeria on November 14, His father was the founder and first principal of the Church Missionary Society Grammar School in Lagos, and his mother was a daughter of the Reverend Samuel Ajayi Crowther, the first registered student of West Africa’s oldest University, Fourah Bay College. Herbert started his tertiary education at Fourah Bay College, which the British established in to train talented English speaking West Africans to serve the colonial government in various administrative positions. In , Macauley obtained a scholarship to study in Plymouth, England where he qualified as a land surveyor and a civil engineer.
Upon his graduation in , he returned to Nigeria where the colonial government appointed him surveyor of crown lands for the colony of Lagos. In , he resigned from his position and established a private civil engineering company in Lagos, Nigeria.
During the s, a period in Nigerian history associated with the beginning of political agitation for self-rule, Macauley became a leading figure in the first generation of Nigerian Nationalists. In , Macauley passionately led protes

Herbert Macaulay (), Nigerian nationalist and politician, was born in Lagos on November 14, After going to a Christian missionary school, he took a job as a clerk at the Lagos Department of Public Works. From to he studied civil engineering in Plymouth, England. On his return, he worked for the Crown as a land inspector. Macaulay was one of the first Nigerian nationalists and for most of his life a strong opponent of British rule in Nigeria. On June 24, , he founded the Nigerian National Democratic Party (NNDP), the first Nigerian political party. In Macaulay co-founded the National Council of Nigeria and the Cameroons (NCNC) together with Nnamdi Azikiwe and became its president. In Macaulay fell ill in Kano and later died in Lagos.
