Il 14 luglio del nasce, a Rosario in Argentina, Ernesto Guevara, primogenito di Ernesto Guevara Lynch e di Celia de la Serna. Cresce in una famiglia agiata – il padre è costruttore edile -in una zona al confine con Brasile e Paraguay, dove i genitori posseggono una piantagione di erba mate.
Nel i genitori di Ernesto decidono di trasferirsi prima a Cordova e successivamente ad Altagracia, dove il clima è più adatto per il loro figlio maggiore, che dal soffre di una grave forma di asma.
Nei primi anni Quaranta, Ernesto Guevara legge con avidità molti classici delle letteratura mondiale presenti nella ricca biblioteca paterna: Baudelaire, Neruda, ma anche Freud.
