John Knox: The Iron Man of Reform in Scotland
The reform carried out by Luther and Calvin came at a much later date to Scotland than to Germany and Switzerland. Although Scotland lacked early leaders as in Germany and Switzerland, it had a powerful leader in the person of John Knox. A historian wrote: "John Knox provoked rulers, incited riots, and inspired a reformation in Scotland." According to an English ambassador, "He put more life into his hearers from the pulpit in an hour than the blast of six hundred trumpets."

John Knox is thought to have been born around in Haddington, a small town south of Edinburgh. His parents were lower to middle class; his father a craftsmen or merchant. Although of humble origins, he received a good education, mastering Latin and attending the University of Glasgow by He studied theology and was ordained in April This did not lead to a parish appointment since there was an excess of priests in Scotland. Undoubtedly, we can distinguish the hand of God here, for Knox became a public notary at Haddington and tutor to sons of lower ranking nobility instead of a practicing Roman Catholic priest. -John Knox has been called a Hebrew Jeremiah set down on Scottish soil. After witnessing the martyrdom of Patrick Hamilton, a young nobleman returned from Germany with the Gospel, Knox was soon, in heart devotion, standing on the same side as the martyr. Knox boldly embraced the Reformation in a dangerously anti-Reformation realm. Though he was quite reluctant to accept a call to preach, almost immediately he was considered one of the most powerful preachers of his day. Knox strongly believed that the Roman Catholic Church was beyond repair and nothing less than a complete restart was necessary. That restart, he believed, could only come through a knowledge of the Word of God. Through a marvelous providence, not excepting persecution, Knox sought refuge in Geneva, under John Calvin. After some tutelage, Calvin encouraged Knox to return to Scotland because of its great turmoil, urging that he should be present to influence his nation for God. That he did, fearlessly. John Knox, a preacher and historian of the Scottish Reformation, was born into a peasant family in Haddington, Scotland. The exact date of his birth is uncertain, with arguments for three different dates - , , and
Education and Conversion
Knox studied at a primary school in Haddington and later attended either the University of Glasgow or St. Andrews (or possibly both). He initially prepared for priesthood but, after the death of George Wishart, who was burned at the stake in , Knox switched sides and became a leader of the Protestant movement in Scotland.
Imprisonment and Exile
