William Kelvin was a British mathematical physicist and engineer. He did important work in mathematical analysis of electricity and even formulated the first and second laws of thermodynamics. William also worked as an electric telegraph engineer and inventor which propelled him into the public eye and ensured his fame, wealth, and honor. He was knighted by Queen Victoria to become Sir William. Lord Kelvin is famous for determining the accurate value of absolute zero as approximately Celsius.

Early Life

William was born on June 26, His father was a teacher of mathematics and engineering. At the age of nine, William had heart problems that almost killed him. He attended the Royal Belfast Academical Institution where his father was a professor. In , at the age of 10, he started his studies at Glasgow University. The university provided many facilities of an elementary school for the able pupils and was basically a typical starting age.

In this school, he showed great interest in the classics and sciences. At o

Early life and education

Professor William Thomson, later Baron Kelvin of Largs, was born in Belfast, Ireland, 26 June and died in Largs, Scotland 17 December His life and career was one of academic excellence, innovation and pioneering achievements. This short biography cannot do justice to Thomson’s many accomplishments but can help to highlight and celebrate a life that was an inspiration to many.

Thomson’s introduction to this world came at an early age. His father, James Thomson, was Professor of Mathematics at the Academical Institution, Belfast and then in was appointed to the Chair of Mathematics at the University of Glasgow.  He welcomed his sons to lectures and Thomson, being an extraordinary child, matriculated from the University of Glasgow at age His academic prowess did not stop there.

In , aged seventeen, Thomson was admitted to St Peter's College, Cambridge.  His undergraduate achievements were not solely academic: he also founded the Peterhouse Musical Society and won the Colquhoun silver sculls for rowing. By , at the tender age of 22, he became Professor of Natural Philosophy at the University of Glasgow- a position he held for the next 53

William thomson () was a British physicist and mathematician born in Belfast (Ireland). Also known as Lord Kelvin by the title of nobility granted for his contributions to science, he is considered one of the British scholars who contributed most to the development of physics.

Thomson held a position as Professor of Natural Philosophy at the University of Glasgow for most of his life, despite continual job offers from other more reputable educational institutions. From that position, the scientist gave a decisive impulse to experimental studies, then little appreciated.

His main achievements include the establishment of an absolute heat scale that bears his name: the Kelvin scale. In addition, he published some studies on the systems of measurement units and patented measuring devices such as the galvanometer. Likewise, it helped to perfect transmissions through submarine cables.

All these works earned him the award of the title of Baron Kelvin. Thomson also became the first scientist to serve in the House of Lords. His death occurred in December and he was buried next to Isaac Newton, in Westmi

Sir William Thomson, Lord Kelvin ( - )

Lord Kelvin  ©Kelvin was a Scottish mathematician and physicist who developed the Kelvin scale of temperature measurement.

William Thomson was born on 26 June in Belfast. He was taught by his father, a professor of mathematics. In , the family moved to Glasgow where Thomson attended university from the age of 10, subsequently studying at Cambridge and Paris universities. In he became professor of natural philosophy in Glasgow, a post he would hold for more than 50 years.

In Glasgow, Thomson created the first physics laboratory in Britain. He was a pioneer in many different fields, particularly electromagnetism and thermodynamics. Together with Faraday, he was responsible for the introduction of the concept of an electromagnetic field. In thermodynamics, Thomson assimilated and developed the work of the pioneers of the subject, Nicolas Carnot and James Joule. One of the most important results of his work was his idea of an absolute zero of temperature - the scale based on this is named after him.

Throughout his work Thomson's overriding goal was the practical utilisation of science. He achieved fame through his work on submarine
