Worldly Saints
marks the year anniversary of the launch of the Reformation. Martin Luther is credited for being the leader of the movement that effectively created the Protestant sect of Christianity. This week, I will be posting blurbs on the life of Martin Luther. It is one of many special series I plan to share during to commemorate this fantastic series of events that led to separation from the Roman Catholic Church.
Confession in the monastery as a regular discipline was rarely encouraged, but, for Luther, confession was a daily discipline. Sometimes he confessed for as long as six hours at a time! He took it to the highest extreme.
Luther asked on one occasion, “Love God? Sometimes I hate Him.” How could someone say such a thing? Well, only someone tormented by their sin could come to such a conclusion.
Luther confessed for hours. He would review the Ten Commandments and seven deadly sins and would exclaim,
“Man, God is not angry with you. You are angry with God. Don’t you know that God commands you to hope?”
He also says later that at this time the greatest Scriptural fear he had was breaking the 1st Commandment – “You shall have no other gods before Me”
Martin Luther (November 10, – February 18, ) was a German monk who became the father of the Protestant Reformation. Martin Luther criticised aspects of the Catholic Church and the concept of Papal infallibility. In particular, he believed that it was the Bible alone and not priests or the Church which had legitimacy for interpreting the word of Christ. Martin Luther also translated the Bible into German, making it more accessible to the general public.
Short Biography of Martin Luther
Martin Luther was born 10 November , in Eisleben, Saxony (modern day Germany). His father was relatively wealthy and paid for his son to gain an education in Magdeburg and Eisenach.
In , Martin Luther became a student at the University of Erfurt. At the request of his father, he took law, but he soon abandoned law, preferring to study Aristotle and the subjects of philosophy and theology. Despite admiring aspects of Aristotle and the classics, he was unsatisfied with just reason and intellectual studies and decided to become a monk so he could devote his life to God.
His time as a monk was challenging. Luther engaged in severe austerities fasting, long hours of prayer and frequen
The Life of Martin Luther: A Brief Biography of the Reformer
Martin Luther was a man whose heart was held captive to the Word of God. He was used mightily by God to usher in the Protestant Reformation, which would serve to recover the core truths of the Gospel that had been obscured by medieval religion and superstition.
Here is a brief biography of the man who sparked the Reformation.
The Early Years
Martin Luther was born on November 10, in Eisleben, Germany to Margaret and Hans Luder (the original pronunciation).
Hans worked in the mining industry, even owning a few copper mines, but he wanted something better for his son. Martin was sent off to boarding school and then to the University of Erfurt.
He was an excellent student. He soon earned both a bachelor’s and master’s degree and seemed to be well on his way to success as a law student. But about a month into his legal studies, on the 2nd of June in , Luther was on his way back to school from his parent’s home when he was caught in a violent thunderstorm. The storm grew more intense and Luther became afraid for his life.
Suddenly, a lightning bolt struck near him, throwing him violently to the ground. Luther
10 Very Good Books on the Reformation and Martin Luther
As we anticipate the celebration of the th year anniversary of the Reformation, I put together a “top ten list” of some of the best (and mostly recent) books on the history, theology, and legacy of the Reformation.
This list is, perhaps predictably, tilted a bit heavily to Luther and the Reformation in Germany. A different or supplementary list could be provided that gives the best books on Calvin, Zwingli, the Radical Reformers, etc. This list includes some books that cover the full breadth of the Reformation, but some are certainly Luther-centric.
Without further ado, here’s the list (not ranked by order of “best to least-best”).
1.Heretics and Believers: A History of the English Reformation by Peter Marshall (Yale University Press, ). This book is a terrific resource for understanding the English tributaries of the Reformation, beginning with John Wycliffe, the “Lollards” (those heretical “mumblers!”), and William Tyndale’s English translation of the New Testament. The prose is lively and the storytelling is rich–though reader beware: it gets dense at times in the historical weeds. With so many books focused on
