Michael Parkes: Pioneer of Magic Realism
Michael Parkes, renowned for his surreal paintings and meticulous lithographs, is an American artist and the visionary behind the Magic Realism movement.
Early Life and Artistic Journey
Born in in Sikeston, Missouri, Parkes immersed himself in art at Kansas University, exploring abstract expressionism and primitive art. However, his unique style emerged during his time spent in India, where he sought spiritual enlightenment.
Magic Realism: A Philosophical Odyssey
Inspired by Eastern philosophy, Parkes' paintings and lithographs exhibited a detailed realism, portraying scenes that evoked a sense of the uncanny. This fusion of realism and the fantastical gave birth to Magic Realism, a movement that would define his artistry.

Michael Parkes (born in in Sikeston, Missouri) is an American-born artist living in Spain who is best known for work in the areas of fantasy art and magic realism. He specializes in painting, stone lithography and sculpture. Parkes' work is widely available in the form of self published mass production poster prints and nine published books.

Biography
Parkes studied graphic art and painting at the University of Kansas. His unique style evolved in isolation, after a period in which he gave up the practice of art altogether and went to India in search of philosophical illumination.
Early on, he painted in the generally abstract expressionist style common among his teachers. However, after his pause for reflection, he began to draw and paint in a meticulous style of detailed representation which enabled him to give full expression to his inner world of images.
Parkes' mature style can be described as realistic in principle, with magical subject matter, later works being characterized by magic realism. Parkes has written that his style resulted from a study

Features of the artist: Michael Parkes is considered one of the founders of magical realism. And taking into account the peculiarities of the artist’s mature, mature creativity, the style of his works could be characterized as sensual magical realism.
The main and obligatory heroes of his works are women: naked, with glowing marble skin, perfect in execution, cold and perfectly impersonal. The artist deliberately never resorted to the services of posing models, so that in the images of the characters in the paintings the human individuality and specificity did not appear.
The plot of paintings is a free space filled with air and devoid of gravity.
Heroes and objects are always carefully and extremely realistic, traced in detail and give the viewer a feeling of a lively, vivid, almost real dream.
Each object of the picture, live or inanimate, simple or complex, real or fictional, becomes the simplest element. From these "bricks" the author builds his "real magical world."
