Historiquement, les équations différentielles sont apparues au début du développement de l’analyse, à l’occasion de problèmes de géométrie et de mécanique.
Le calcul intégral remonte aux Grecs de l’Antiquité. Au IVe siècle avant notre ère, Eudoxe de Cnide fut l’un des premiers à calculer les aires par des encadrements successifs, en utilisant la technique d’exhaustion (voir Le Calcul intégral, Bibliothèque Tangente 50, ). Afin d’encadrer le nombre π, les Grecs (Archimède en tête) inscrivaient à l’intérieur d’un cercle un polygone dont ils savaient calculer la surface, puis ils dessinaient à l’extérieur du cercle un second polygone. François de Beaune ()
Early Life and InfluencesFrançois de Beaune was born in in Blois, France. In his youth, he served in the military before purchasing a position at the royal court in his hometown. There, he befriended the young René Descartes and contributed numerous annotations to Descartes' geometry.
The Beaune Problem
Beaune became renowned for the Beaune Problem, a mathematical challenge involving the determination of a curve based on a given property of its tangents. This problem remained unresolved until , when Jakob Bernoulli solved it using integral calculus.
Major Work
Beaune's significant contribution to mathematics was his treatise "De aequationum constructione et limitibus," which was published in Amsterdam in by Erasmus Bartholin. This work demonstrated his expertise in the construction and limits of equations.
Legacy and Impact

Exemple typique de ces érudits amateurs qui, au xvne siècle, participèrent activement à la diffusion et au progrès de la science moderne, Florimond de Beaune () est surtout connu comme disciple de Descartes. Après une brève carrière militaire, il acquit une charge de conseiller au Présidial de Blois et partagea dès lors son activité entre la jurisprudence et la recherche mathématique tout en entretenant une importante correspondance érudite (1). L'inventaire après décès de sa bibliothèque et de ses « instruments et machines mathématiques », transcrit et annoté par P. Gostabel (p. de l'ouvrage analysé), confirme l'étendue de sa curiosité et l'intérêt tout spécial qu'il portait aux sciences, et en particulier à l'astronomie (2). Florimond de Beaune's name is often given in the form Debeaune. He was born in Blois, which is in central France on the Loire River and, at the time de Beaune was born there, it was almost a second capital of France. Florimond de Beaune's father, also called Florimond de Beaune, was the illegitimate son of Jean II de Beaune whose brother was the archbishop Renaud de Beaune.
