Reader's Guide

Sholem Aleichem, Jeremy Dauber writes in his new biography, is “the man responsible, in his day and ours, for the most compelling picture of the world of our great grandfathers, a society in dizzying, wrenching transition from the traditional life of centuries past to the modern age.” A master of Yiddish stories, chronicler of Jewish life, and creator of enduring fictional characters who continue to gain devoted fans across the globe, Sholem Aleichem helped to shape our modern notions about shtetl life and the now-vanished Jewish world of Eastern Europe. In The Worlds of Sholem Aleichem, Dauber explores the author’s life, from his birth in a small town near Kiev in to his death in New York City in Through these tumultuous decades, the author’s personal life and career serve as a lens on enormous cultural shifts taking place at the time, not only in terms of literature and language, but with respect to politics, religion, nationalism, assimilation, and self-determination, as well.

WHO WAS SHOLEM ALEICHEM?

Sholem Aleichem: novelist, essayist, playwright and one of the great writers of the lateth and earlyth centuries. Born Sholem Naumovich Rabinovich he created rich characters that stand out because of their humanity and their universal appeal. He was read and admired by Tolstoy and Chekhov, and by hundreds of thousands of newspaper readers1 who pored over his weekly installments, eager to find out what happened next. Published serially with great frequency in the burgeoning mass medium of Yiddish newsprint, Sholem Aleichem had a close relationship with his readers, similar in many ways to popular bloggers and their readers today.

His protagonists are lovable, fallible people from a traditional world, running headlong towards the brink of modernity. In his day, Sholem Aleichem was often called “The Jewish Mark Twain.” Like Twain, he was skilled at writing dialogue in many different voices. His Motl, Menakhem Mendel, Sheyne Sheyndel, Tevye and a panoply of other characters still pop off the page today.

Sholem Aleichem wrote primarily about Eastern European Jews, and is perhaps best known for Tevye the Dairyman, upon which Broadway’s Fiddler on t

Sholem Aleichem (pen-name for Sholem Rabinovich, born in Russia, , died in New York, ) remains the central figure of modern Yiddish fiction—not with regard to technique or style, which have since followed other paths, but in his profound identification through his characters and his vivid narrators with the collective spirit of Yiddish-speaking Jewry. In his own lifetime he rapidly achieved the status, with the attendant simplifications, not of writer but of beloved folk hero. His funeral in New York, attended by scores of thousands, was a rite of national mourning.

Sholem Aleichem’s relation both to his fictional materials and to his audience was essentially episodic and conversational. The two works drawn together in this new volume were both composed over a span of years by fits and starts. Tevye the Dairyman, probably Sholem Aleichem’s most famous work, began as a story published separately in Further tales of t
